“What’s In a Name?” − Questioning? Non-Binary? Asexual? Two Spirt? Cisgender? Thanks to increasing visibility and acceptance, and the always-increasing speed of social media, every day we’re being introduced to more and more letters, words and phrases being introduced into the LGBTQ+ community.
“What’s In a Name?” is an awareness program presented by Persad Center designed to shed some light and navigate a path through this forest of language. The 45-minute program examines the specific meaning of letters in the LGBTQ+ “alphabet soup” with a discussion of how the evolution of the letters mirrors the history of the movement.
“What’s In a Name?” also looks at some of the most recent terms used in the trans and non-binary communities and how that language is helping us to move beyond the transphobic and outdated attitudes from the past.
In this webinar we will:
- Examine the specific meaning of letters in the LGBTQ+ community.
- Explore how the evolution of the letters mirrors the history of the movement.

- be able to reflect on their own experiences and perceptions regarding the LGBT+ community.
Speaker:
Ted Hoover is an Educator/Trainer who works at the Persad Center, the nation’s second oldest behavioral health and wellness center working with the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS community. Ted has previously worked with PA Bureau of Family Health on such issues as LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention, adolescent sexual health and creating safe work/education environments across the Commonwealth. Additionally, he focuses on issues of discrimination, hate crime and human trafficking with area law enforcement and the Civil Rights Division of the FBI.
